The following resolution was passed today by the Jefferson Parish Council, local officials are aware of the problem and taking action to ensure that engineering education gets funding. This was resolution #43 on the council's agenda for 1/25/06. It passed unanimously.
On motion of Mr. Young, seconded by , the following resolution was offered:
RESOLUTION NO. _____________________
A resolution requesting the Louisiana Congressional Delegation and the Jefferson Parish Legislative Delegation to support and endeavor to have enacted necessary legislation to support and encourage the training of engineers in Louisiana to effectively address the challenges unique to Louisiana and the New Orleans area for local coastal restoration, levee construction and other flood mitigation and protection systems.
WHEREAS, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Tulane University will no longer offer training in civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering; and
WHEREAS, while Louisiana faces unprecedented recovery tasks due to the hurricanes, the long-term protection of the area from future hurricanes depends upon the expertise of locally-trained engineers who are familiar with the hydrology, soil types and other factors unique to southern Louisiana and the New Orleans area; and
WHEREAS, in order to maximize the effective use of funds allocated by the Federal, State and local governments for flood protection in southern Louisiana, the design of systems to effect such protections by engineers who are knowledgeable of the local conditions and who have a stake in the future viability of this area is essential; and
WHEREAS, this Council wishes to request the Louisiana’s Congressional Delegation and the Jefferson Parish Legislative Delegation to support and encourage the restoration of engineering disciplines to universities in Louisiana; and particularly, in the Jefferson Parish area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Jefferson Parish Council of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, acting as governing authority of said Parish:
SECTION 1. That this Council does hereby request the Louisiana Congressional Delegation and the Jefferson Parish Legislative Delegation to support and endeavor to have enacted necessary legislation to support and encourage the training of engineers in Louisiana to effectively address the challenges unique to Louisiana and the New Orleans area for local coastal restoration, levee construction and other flood mitigation and protection systems.
SECTION 2. That the Parish Clerk is hereby requested and authorized to send a certified copy of this resolution to the members of the United States Congressional Delegation representing Louisiana.
The foregoing resolution having been submitted to a vote, the vote thereon was as follows:

The resolution was declared to be adopted on this the 25th day of January, 2006.

Congratulations. Hey Cowen, is Tulane still standing shoulder to shoulder with New Orleanians now?
Remember, Jefferson Parish is now the largest parish in the state. _________________ Clay Kirby

Alright so what exactly does all this mean? Is someone gonna cough up some money to make Tulane keep it open? Are they gonna pass some bill to force Tulane to stay open? Anyway maybe I missed it, when is the vote?Sorry if this was answered in the post. |
