Dear George Voinovich, I am sure you have heard the most recent news regarding Tulane University. In case you have not, here is a quick summary. Tulane University has stood strong for over 150 years. The College of Engineering itself has been a cornerstone of our institution since 1894. President Cowen and his board of advisers have chosen to dismantle the College of Engineering by eliminating Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Exercise and Sports Fitness as well as miscellaneous sports programs. I am sure you know the role of engineering in modern society and the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Tulane hopes to remain a world-class educational institution in the years to come. I feel that this aspiration is undermined by the elimination of such a key part of the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Engineers are what New Orleans needs most. I hope that you will contact President Cowen (scowen@tulane.edu), as well as any other influential persons who could help our cause. We need to show the administration that there are better ways to secure the financial future of Tulane University. I have setup a website, SaveTulaneEngineering.org, that will spearhead the effort to save the School of Engineering from being another loss in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Thank you for your support.
